Benson is one of the oldest communities in the Omaha metropolitan area. It grew to a population of approximately 5,000 before it was annexed by Omaha in 1917; today, Benson is part of North Omaha and is one of the best-known and culturally important neighborhoods in the Omaha area. The Benson neighborhood is known for live music clubs, with the Benson Grind coffeehouse also serving as a venue for local artists to display their artwork. Read more about Benson.

More About Benson

Founded in 1887, Benson was the result of a 900-acre land purchase by Erastus Benson, a renowned investor and land speculator. Benson gained prominence due to his work in marketing the inventions of Thomas Edison; this led to his later philanthropic activities and a failed bid for the position of Mayor of Omaha in 1906. The city was originally called Benson Place, but the name was soon shortened to Benson. Benson was annexed by Omaha in 1917, and today comprises a significant portion of North Omaha.

Benson is an established community with a vibrant performing and visual arts scene. Local clubs include the Sydney and the Musette Bar; the Benson Grind features live music performances and exhibits artwork for sale by area artists. Benson is a pedestrian and bike-friendly community, with groceries, restaurants, libraries and major employers within walking distance of the neighborhood. Children in the community attend schools in the outstanding Omaha Public School District. Benson has been considered for Tax Increment Financing in order to stimulate development and new construction in the historic downtown area; this proposal has been endorsed by the Omaha Planning Board, but has not yet been submitted to the City Council for a final ruling.
