Plattsmouth, Nebraska is one of the oldest communities in the region and the county seat of Cass County. Founded in 1854, it was built on the banks of the Missouri River and benefited from the trade and transportation that the river provided. Steamboats and ferry boats often docked at Plattsmouth, and it grew steadily as a result of river traffic. By the time the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad reached Plattsmouth in 1869, the community was already well established as a center for trade in the area. Forty-five of the buildings in the Main Street Historic District are currently listed with the National Registry of Historic Places; numerous older homes in the area feature impressive architecture and stately charm.
Plattsmouth’s excellent schools and rural charm make it a popular choice with families; residents enjoy a high standard of living and many employment opportunities due to the city’s proximity to the Omaha metropolitan area. Plattsmouth residents typically commute to jobs outside the county, though local government and education provide some opportunities within the city limits. Shopping opportunities are available in nearby Papillion or in Omaha or Council Bluffs, both within easy driving distance of the Plattsmouth area. Home prices are reasonable, with the median price hovering around $145,000; this makes Plattsmouth a bargain in the Omaha-Council Bluffs area.
