Tidal Wave Auto Spa

Tidal Wave Auto Spa’s roots stem all the way back to the year 1999 when Scott and Hope Blackstock decided to add a car wash to their Thomaston, Georgia-based auto service center. We started with a simple, 5 bay self-service wand wash. Soon, we expanded the wash with a newly-designed, specialty mud bay, which proved to be a big hit with ATV and ORV enthusiasts.

2004 was a magical year Tidal Wave opened its very first express car wash and revolutionized the car wash industry. This first express wash, which ultimately became Tidal Wave’s signature model, was located in metro Atlanta. Its success with the public attracted visits from industry insiders from across the country. Tidal Wave’s founders had traveled across the southeast researching ways to improve the industry. Our search helped change the industry, and more importantly, gave our customers a superior car wash experience and a better, cleaner product out of the wash tunnel.

Lights on Dundee 2022

Every year, Dundee becomes very festive for the holidays. That includes lighting up all the trees in the downtown district as well as hosting Lights on Dundee.

This year, they shut down the streets leading into the downtown district.

Festivities included hayrack rides, photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, free hot chocolate, and more.

At the Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate's office in Dundee, kids could play "I Spy" while interacting with the Grinch.

Best Omaha Thrift Shops for Home Decor

In an effort to move towards sustainability and to save money, many homeowners have been embracing thrifting for both furniture and décor alike. Not only can thrifted wares be a lovely addition to a home, but they also tend to be more affordable than many new options. The city of Omaha offers plenty in terms of re-purposed decor, furniture, and beyond. Here are some excellent options to inspire a thrifty journey.

Goodwill has multiple area locations, from Papillion to West Omaha to Council Bluffs. In fact, Goodwill has 17 area locations for shopping and donations, making it convenient from anywhere in the metro. While they mostly provide low-cost clothing, Goodwill also stocks area rugs, small appliances, furniture, books, lamps, and kitchen items. Don’t be afraid to go often, as new treasures show up every day.

Another charity-run thrift spot is Habitat for Humanity’s Restore. With both a West Omaha and South Omaha locale, the ReStore is a unique thrifting option. Shoppers can peruse the usual things like furniture, lamps, and artwork, but also harder to find carpet, blinds, wood, plumbing, doors, windows, hardware, appliances, and tools, among others. A ReStore E-store makes shopping from home easy too.

Prairie in Bloom Marketplace is a farmhouse favorite located in North Downtown. Though they generally focus on new items, there are occasional antiques and funky thrifted finds available as well, so don’t forget to check out this cute shop PS: We love this business, and it’s already been featured on the blog in a Local Spotlight: Holiday Decor Tips from Prairie in Bloom

Photo by Sara Cohen on Unsplash

Midtown’s Junk N Treasure is an ideal location to find thrifted artwork, furniture, tchotchkes, and more. This small shop gets 500-1,000 new items each week, so it’s worth visiting a time or two. Pro tip: Remember, if you find a frame you love, you can always replace the art inside, or if you find a print you can’t live without but with a junky frame, it can be re-framed; somewhere local like Visions Custom Framing is your best bet.

Estate sales are another great way to locate gently used items for the home. There are numerous companies that specialize in putting on sales, including longtime favorite Hidden Treasures, one of the oldest tag sale companies in the city. Check the Omaha World Herald for other listings too

The Benson neighborhood is home to Found Vintage Market, a used furniture store, and more. With a focus on rustic, reclaimed, and repurposed goods, Found helps to round out the thrifted options in Omaha. It is also the largest purely vintage indoor shopping space in the area and even offers paint and supplies too.

Instagram thrifting has been a growing segment of the business. In Omaha, follow Jillian at Baird & Co for thrifted baskets, antique glassware, and handpicked vintage goodness. Weekly sales are the norm, so be on the lookout for posts with new items regularly.

Photo by Ruan Martinelli on Unsplash

Yearland is an Instagram account and beyond curated by Joshua Foo and Lauren Abell; the pair run an online store that and handpick unique vintage and antique items. Old Dutch ovens, lamps, handwoven baskets, mic century modern chair sets, hand-painted ceramics, and decorative dishes are just some of what shoppers can expect from Yearland.

Special events can provide an excellent thrift adventure. Though they generally happen only once or twice a year, gatherings like Junkstock or the Junior League of Omaha’s Bargain Bash can be optimal sources for great deals on thrifted decor and homewares. Add them to your calendar every year

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul boasts five Omaha area thrift-focused stores. These locations include Papillion, West Center, Northwest Omaha, Downtown Omaha, and South Omaha, making it an approachable destination for nearly everyone in the metro. Besides clothing, St. Vincent de Paul shops stock kitchen items like flatware, glasses, small appliances, and dishes, as well as major appliances like washers and dryers. Additionally, artwork, rugs, linens, mirrors, lighting, electronics, books, and more can be found in area shops.

Photo by Jazmin Quaynor on Unsplash

Little Bohemia’s woman-owned Dusk Goods & Gifts is another valuable source for vintage items for the bespoke home. Thrifted pieces like art, pillows, linens, vases, glassware and beyond are sprinkled throughout the sunny shelves of Dusk. Stop in often since the inventory is ever-rotating.

One of the best spots for thrifted furniture is Dundee Flea in Dundee. Located right on Dodge Street, this shop has excellent antique and vintage pieces, like hutches, dressers, tables, desks, lamps, artwork, chairs, and rugs. They call their style a blend of old, new, and vintage, so there’s sure to be something for every type of homeowner.

These are just some of the excellent thrifting and used décor sourcing spots in and around Omaha. What are your favorites?

Omaha’s Best Healthy Takeout Dishes

In the snow days of winter, sometimes the last thing you want to do is cook a nutritious meal for yourself and/or your family. Luckily for us all, the Omaha area boasts an incredible amount of locally-owned eateries and locally-owned franchises that can satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. Read on for some solid healthy dishes that still taste good to go, and support your favorite restaurants when they need it most.

Longtime West O favorite Railcar Modern American Kitchen has a number of great healthy dishes that lend themselves to “to go” success. Chef and owner Jared Clarke suggests his Seattle BBQ Salmon. This meal consists of North Road Certified Sustainable Faroe island salmon, with a soy and pomegranate molasses glaze, yukon mashed potato, and broccolini stir fry. Another option in the appetizer realm is the restaurant’s Cast Iron Brussels Sprouts, with roasted chicken stock, hazelnuts, bacon, parmesan cheese and molasses.

Known for being a healthy grub pioneer in Omaha, there are now three locations of Greenbelly, the original on 114th street, an Elkhorn outpost, and the newest iteration in the Aksarben area. Founder Michael Schall shared that one of his favorite dishes is the Chicken Bruschetta Lettuce Wraps. With tons of veggie and protein power, these wraps are an excellent take out option and provide a boost of healthy goodness any time of day.

Comfort food famous Block 16 is a culinary heavyweight in the Omaha scene. Their iconic downtown location is perhaps best known for the famous Croque Garcon burger, but the team encourages a slightly lighter option, the Bacon and Brie. It is a favorite, quick, simple and easy to eat sandwich that’s less calorie dense than their burger or epic daily specials. Enjoy thick-cut bacon, Brie, a regional fruit spread, and peppery arugula served on herbed Le Quartier bread. Pair it with healthy options like grilled chicken or salmon salad, with mixed greens, pickled red onion, local veggies, and house vinaigrette.

Locally-focused caterer Heirloom Fine Foods offers a rotating meal prep menu each week. One of their mainstay items is Crudité with Sweet Potato Hummus, which can be purchased for either 1-2 people, 10-12 people, or just the spread itself in two different size options. According to chef and founder Shelley Elson-Roza, “our sweet potato hummus is technically a sweet potato spread because it doesn’t contain chickpeas, but we call it hummus because it tastes so similar.” This addictive yet nutritious pick is a client favorite and is perfect for a to go dish. Slow roasted sweet potatoes with a secret house mix of spices combine for a highly nutritious item. These locally sourced sweet potatoes actually promote gut health, are good for your vision, and may enhance brain function and the immune system. Other excellent dishes from the meal prep menu include a variety of winter soups, a dazzling winter citrus yogurt bowl, and a number of impressive salads.

Another dish ideal for a nutritious takeout option comes from Omaha’s newest hotel, the Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel, which has a number of delicious onsite restaurants. A perfect option for to go dining that hits a healthy note is the Nicoise Salad at the Orleans Room. A classic French take, this scrumptious salad is comprised of olive oil, poached tuna, heirloom tomato, haricot vert (green beans), yukon golds, nicoise olives, fresh greens, a soft boiled egg and finely diced herbs.

Omaha’s own Blue Sushi Sake Grill has an awesome healthy lunch special that is perfect for takeout. Their Lunch Special is a budget friendly way to enjoy high quality sushi and is currently available Monday-Saturday from open-2pm, both dine-in and to-go. One healthy combination is shown in the photo below, a simple Cali Roll (crab mix, avocado, cucumber) and an order of protein-packed Sake Sashimi (salmon). This lunch deal also comes with miso soup or a salad for an even more well-rounded meal. For extra convenience, Blue has three Omaha locations, at Legacy, Eagle Run, and downtown.

For a fruit-forward healthy bite, consider a trip to Vitality Bowls, which is a locally-owned franchise with locations in Aksarben and Legacy areas. Owner Katie De Santis, loves the Vitality Bowl, their signature Acai Bowl. Its base consists of organic acai, bananas, strawberries, flax seed and a specialty VB Blend, which has five plant-based powders that give a nutritional boost It’s topped with organic granola, bananas, strawberries, organic goji berries and honey. Acai is a superfood that is known to be high in antioxidants, aids in weight loss, regulates blood sugar, and promotes a healthy heart. DeSantis also shared that the Dragon Bowl (pictured below) is another customer favorite at Vitality Bowls that offers health benefits. Its base is a combination of pitaya, bananas, pineapple, raspberries, an immunity boost powder, mango juice and coconut milk. This pretty bowl is topped with strawberries, kiwi, almonds, goji berries, bee pollen and honey. Pitaya, also known as Dragon Fruit, is high in Vitamin B and C as well as magnesium. This bowl is light and refreshing and helps support lasting energy with the vitamins it provides.

Downtown slow food fast staple Kitchen Table offers tons of health-forward options. One vegetarian and gluten free winner is their new Madras Style Veggie Curry with Fried Rice and Toasted Lentils. It can be purchased warmed up and ready to go, or can be frozen and prepared from your freezer to your table in 15 mins. Lentils are an ideal meat substitute, as they are high in protein and low in fat. (FYI, Madras is the former name of Chennai, India, if you’d like to know more about this delicious curry)

A relatively new kid on the healthy block, Lola’s in Dundee has a couple of winning takeout favorites. First is their Grilled Halloumi Salad featuring organic quinoa, radish, chickpeas, parsley, and red onion in a homemade lemon dressing. A lovely pairing with this salad is the sandwich next to it, a roasted butternut squash concoction with burrata cheese and salsa verde. Try either one or both of these dishes to go from their central Omaha location.

Streamline Your Move: Tips from a Professional Organizer

Few people can claim to enjoy the hectic moving process, with all of those pieces of the puzzle jostling around simultaneously… Changing your address. Getting WiFi hooked up. Packing, cleaning, unpacking, then more cleaning. Oftentimes, the organization of a home prior to moving can help make that transition to a new space much more pleasant. To ease that burden and learn more about services offered right here in the Omaha area, we chatted with Lisa Tonjes Moritz from HOPE Organizing. Since 2019, most of the business has tightened its focus on the niche of photo and memorabilia organizing, with some general home and office organizing sprinkled in.

HOPE helps families and businesses organize, preserve, share and celebrate their memories. That includes digital photo organizing, printed photo organizing, memorabilia organizing, preserving, digitizing old photos, and more. Tonjes Moritz even determines the best way to share images with friends and family, based on the particular client. She explained, “We try to research and use many of the ways to share the photos so we can recommend what is best for each client.” It is not a one size fits all approach, with choices like slideshows, photo books, gallery walls, and all types of photo gifts in the mix.

Courtesy of HOPE Organizing

The business woman shared that it’s a great idea to hire a professional, especially before a move, because they don’t have a personal connection to your photos or stuff which allows them to have another perspective. Plus, many things you may be able to do yourself, but an organizer can do it much faster since that’s their entire purpose. Tonjes Moritz explained that the best time to hire someone is when you are ready to get organized, but don’t wait until you are forced to hire someone; you didn’t fill up your house overnight and you can’t declutter an entire house in a day. She added that your time is valuable, stating, “If it is a task that you don’t want to do it may take much more time that you expect and take away time from work or family.”

Courtesy of HOPE Organizing

When asked if she had any organizational tips for those preparing to move, the pro shared the following:

PURGE – don’t move things that you don’t need or use.

Create a checklist for everything you need to do. Changing over utilities, changing addresses, scheduling movers, etc. If there are multiple people moving, make sure that everyone has access to the checklist so something doesn’t get missed or done twice.

When hiring a moving company, get recommendations from family and friends.

Set up a Moving Tool Kit. A few things to include are markers, labels, bubble wrap, newspaper, packing tape, screwdrivers, box cutters, and basic cleaning supplies.

Give every room in the new home a number. Create a chart that shows that number. Label each box or bin with the number of the room at the new home. Post that number on the door to each room and/or on the wall within the room, since a number makes it easier for everyone to get on the same page.

If you have movers doing the packing – pack up anything you know you will need the first week yourself, like the remote for your TV

For moving day, pack a suitcase like you are going on a trip (a few days of clothes, toiletries, phone charges and one set of sheets for each bed plus a towel for each person). This way anything you NEED you don’t have to find.

Courtesy of HOPE Organizing

Tonjes Moritz summed it up and explained that there are general principles that apply to organizing but there is no one right way to do many things (including organizing). “I always try to find out what is working for a client and that is a big part of the solution I create for a client.” Be sure to follow up with these helpful tips from an organizer extraordinaire to remove some of the friction for your next move.

Get a head start on spring cleaning with a full home purge Not only will this make your eventual moving process smoother, but it can be a soothing way to spend a day or four. In fact, numerous studies have shown that clutter can actually increase cortisol production in your body; cortisol is the stress hormone, so practice some self-care by getting rid of the unnecessary things around you. Check out these seven charities in Omaha that will accept donations of your gently used, purged home items.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity Omaha aims to support financial independence through affordable homeownership. The Habitat ReStore accepts in-kind donations of materials to help keep costs low for clients. With a few exceptions, we look for items that you can find at a “big box” home improvement or home furnishing store.” So your old lighting, rugs, furniture, and more can be repurposed in a thoughtful way that enriches the Omaha community.

To learn more, please contact Michele Shearer, Gifts In-kind Manager, at mshearer@habitatomaha.org or 402-884-4329. Additionally, this organization will even pick up items from your home; you can schedule for this optional service and learn more about donation requirements here.

Home Staging Tips from A Pro

A key component of selling a home, even in the current seller’s market, is proper staging. To learn the ins and outs of this service, we tapped local business woman Lisa Conover with Rearranged for Change. Conover focuses on superior home staging, which is the art of making your house aesthetically pleasing to attract potential buyers.

Rearranged For Change has been staging homes in Omaha and the surrounding areas for 15 years. “We were one of the first staging companies in Omaha, like we had to explain what it was to homeowners and agents. It was about that time that HGTV had introduced some shows about home staging and it was from that we (my business partner Liz Cooley and I) gained our inspiration”, shared the staging aficionado. Both Cooley and Conover embraced their college design backgrounds, went to a staging school in nearby Kansas City, and the business was born. Nowadays, Rearranged for Change boasts five assistants, 10 mover helpers, a book keeper, two warehouses and two trucks.

Courtesy of The Mullers for Rearranged for Change

Essentially, the home staging company focuses on two main services. One is staging consultations where representatives from Rearranged For Change meet with owner-occupied homes and do a walk through with them, giving them ideas and suggestions to make modifications to their home before they actually go on the market. “This is working with their decor and furniture arrangements to best use what they have in the home to present to potential buyers. During this appointment we also give suggestions on minor updates, paint color suggestions, decluttering, cleaning and organizing hacks”, shared Conover. The cost of this appointment is $150.00 for two professional stagers for up to two hours.

The second option can be broken into two parts. Conover continued, “We rent furniture and accessories to owner-occupied homes (with restrictions for pets) and we also stage vacant and model homes. We have a HUGE inventory of furniture, artwork, lamps, rugs and decor. We have these items available to rent to homeowners to add to their decor in place to add some wow to the listing”. Examples of these impactful items are usually art, lamps, end tables and decor. As referenced above, furniture may be included if the home is pet free.

The entrepreneur shared that roughly 75 of Rearranged for Change’s business is renting furniture for vacant homes. In fact, their staging inventory is so massive they have the ability to furnish over 50 homes simultaneously. This type of update, furniture in vacant homes, provides distractions from imperfections, a wow factor for buyers as they tour the home, and the MLS photos are much more interesting and can provoke more showings. “The staging can actually make the home seem more valuable when it is furnished properly and furnished homes sell faster and for more money period”, exclaimed Conover. The price structure for this service is bid per project so there is no set pricing, though the bids are no charge appointments. Homeowners should be prepared to spend $1000.00-$2000.00 for an average-sized home.

For readers who want to learn more, Rearranged for Change has offered some of their professional tips for home staging. They want to draw attention to the fact that first impressions are absolutely critical. “We want to knock the buyers over the head when they walk in the door. If they love the way they “feel” as they enter the home then they are more forgiving as they tour if they already like it”, explained Conover. (So don’t waste time scrubbing the store room, replace the old brass light fixture in the entry and dining room.) Cleaning is majorly important as well. Sellers should deep clean, wash windows and present a neat and tidy atmosphere. Lastly, cute also sells. The cuter your house is the more appealing it is for photos and walkthroughs of potential buyers. Conover said, “Buy the cute new rug or canvas you have been wanting for the powder bath; pick out a fresh shower curtain, rod and rings in the main bath and the cute plant from Target that adds interest to the fireplace mantel. Those are inexpensive items you can take with you to the next house.”

Though it’s hard to pick a favorite project, the team at Rearranged for Change loves a good challenge, so give them the tough house and let them be super creative to transform into a beauty queen. They also appreciate the super cool new construction houses that look so amazing before furniture, where they can then add the comfy, homey feel that staging provides. Conover shared, “We recently did a condo in Aksarben, with a new and different sleek style which we really enjoyed putting together.”

Courtesy of The Mullers for Rearranged for Change

Still not sure where to start with home staging? I’m pleased to share that clients of mine receive a complimentary staging service with Rearranged for Change included in every listing. That means that once I have a listing, I bring Lisa or Liz in to walk the home with the owner. They give pointers on what to do, what furniture to remove, how to rearrange it to make the home look bigger, etc. It’s a great bonus service I am happy to provide to help my clients succeed. Clients then have the option to purchase a higher staging level if so desired.

Local Spotlight: Outside Lighting 101 with Brite Ideas Decorating

A handmade wreath tied with ribbon and bells. A festive snowman stationed in your yard. Twinkling lights that adorn your home. All of these can signal that the holiday season has arrived, but only one of these can cause intense frustration year after year. Putting up outdoor lighting is always a chore, but in some years due to weather, it can actually be quite dangerous. For homeowners who’ve considered outsourcing this tedious task, we’ve done the legwork for you

Courtesy of Brite Ideas

To learn all about outdoor holiday lighting and more, we chatted with Josh Scearcy, the Vice President of Business Development at Brite Ideas Decorating. Brite Ideas is actually a longtime Omaha landmark; the company was founded in Omaha by Travis Freeman in 1992, and he still owns and operates 100 of the business. Scearcy added, “We [now] sell to all 50 states and now have a storefront in Colorado, but Omaha is our home.”

Courtesy of Brite Ideas

The VP explained that Brite Ideas manufactures, sells, and installs Wire Frame Christmas light displays, lights, and greenery. They also have retail stores in Omaha and Centennial, Colorado for those who want to come in and see the merchandise in person. Plus, for folks who want their holiday lights to dazzle but still assemble the lights themselves, Scearcy had this to say to Omaha residents, “Our retail store allows homeowners the unique option of buying commercial quality lights to install themselves. That is an option that isn’t available in most places.” Buying commercial to install also helps keep costs lower. For homeowners outside the area, the company also sells wholesale directly to contractors in all 50 states.

The Brite Ideas team will work with you and your budget to find creative solutions, using both their retail and online stores. Simply call to get a free, no obligation estimate and to start the lighting process. And the best part? Additionally, Scearcy shared that most potential customer questions can be answered on the company’s FAQ page, but he wanted readers to know his most asked question, which is “Can we custom decorate my home or business?”. The answer is yes, and they can specially design a display for their customers that will stand out from their neighbors. Brite Ideas is an expert in both types of projects, with roughly 60 of their business falling into the residential category and the remaining 40 considered commercial.

We also asked the Brite Ideas team if they had any advice for those who may want to consider working with them in the future. Scearcy provided his number one tip, “Planning ahead ensures that you will get the display you want, and have it done when you want it. We started selling out of some products in early November this year. So if you waited until around Thanksgiving to plan your decorating, you may not have had all the options you wanted.”

And for an uplifting closing note, you can feel great about shopping with this local purveyor, as they are responsible for the Omaha famous Salvation Army tree on 90th and Dodge each year. Scearcy shared that the tree remains his favorite project ever, saying, “ It’s a beautiful and impressive display that is for a great cause and so many people give their time to make it happen.” All in all, it’s easy to see that Brite Ideas certainly lives up to its name and can help make your holiday season shine even brighter.
