More about Boys Town

Founded in 1917 by Father Edward Flanagan as a shelter for homeless boys, today Boys Town, Nebraska offers a serene retreat for troubled children of both genders. The children who live in Boys Town come from a variety of backgrounds, but share one common characteristic; they all come from troubled pasts and are looking to make a fresh start with help from the committed, compassionate staff who live on campus.

Boys Town is located on 900 acres; 400 acres are dedicated to farmland which is cultivated and worked by the children who live there, providing food for the entire village. The children and youth who reside in Boys Town today typically live in family units with a surrogate mother and father and several foster siblings; by modeling healthy behaviors for the children in their care, these foster parents can provide a warm, nurturing environment for children who may never have experienced a normal, happy family life.

Rules are an important part of the Boys Town experience; children are required to live up to high expectations, and they largely succeed in this. One key part of the educational process is helping children develop their social skills to promote positive interactions and foster respect and self-esteem. Boys Town is a landmark in the Omaha area and throughout the world and has been memorialized in two Hollywood films, making it one of the top tourist attractions in the Omaha area.
