Joslyn Art Museum

Omaha boasts the largest and most culturally significant art museum in the state of Nebraska. Opened in 1931, the Joslyn Art Museum features visual artwork from all eras of history, but is perhaps best known for its collection of American West artworks, including many of the watercolors of Karl Bodmer and important works by John Woodhouse Audubon, Ansel Adams, Frederic Remington, and Alfred Jacob Miller. Named one of the ten best art museums for kids by Child Magazine, the Joslyn Art Museum offers a wide range of family-oriented activities and events; a new Children’s Discovery garden opened to the public in October 2009.

Renowned throughout the Midwest as one of the finest art museums in the region, the Joslyn Art Museum has served the metropolitan Omaha area for over 75 years. Its eclectic collection includes art from all over the world, with its main focus on the art of the American West. Notable artists including Ansel Adams, Frederic Remington, and Alfred Jacob Miller are represented, with a sizable number of watercolors and prints by Karl Bodmer comprising a major attraction for the collection. The building itself is a stunning example of Art Deco construction, and features a lecture hall, a concert hall that can seat 1,000 guests, a library, café, and gift shop in addition to the art gallery.

The Joslyn Art Museum plays host to a number of exhibitions and events throughout the year in addition to its regular collection. Lectures and tours are commonplace, along with interactive events where members of the public are invited to participate in artistic pursuits. The Third Thursday Arts Encounter Club is especially designed for senior citizens who want to explore the world of the fine arts. The Joslyn Art Museum has been named by Child Magazine as one of the ten best art museums for kids, and offers a full range of educational and hands-on activities to encourage children to explore their artistic talents.
