Ralston began its life as a farming estate owned by a local newspaper publisher. Deerfield, as the estate was named, featured an artesian well, a man-made lake and a 17-room mansion. A town grew up around the farm, and by 1909 Ralston had its own post office; incorporation followed in 1912. Main Street was flattened in the following year by a devastating tornado; rather than giving up, local residents rebuilt the town and added significant improvements, including widening the streets and adding a public library that still serves as a center of activity within the community. Today, Ralston offers a quiet oasis in the midst of Omaha’s urban sprawl, allowing its residents to enjoy the best of both worlds; Ralston provides residents with small-town living within easy reach of the advantages of the big city.
