Ralston is a uniquely positioned city. Located entirely within the larger metropolitan area of Omaha, Nebraska, it is an independent city that maintains its own police and fire departments and public services. Ralston takes pride in its independent status, which is largely due to an agreement reached in the late 1960s between the city governments of Omaha and Ralston. Due to its location, Ralston benefits from the numerous employment alternatives provided by the Omaha metropolitan area while retaining its own particular small-town atmosphere and local charm.

Ralston, Nebraska truly is a small town in the heart of the big city. Located inside the city limits of Omaha, Ralston retains its independent government and public services; the Ralston Public School District comprises six elementary schools, a middle school and a high school, and serves over 1,000 students. Ralston’s tree-lined streets and mixed-use zoning ensure plenty of green space for those living in the city, while historic roots provide a solid basis for the community.
Ralston began its life as a farming estate owned by a local newspaper publisher. Deerfield, as the estate was named, featured an artesian well, a man-made lake and a 17-room mansion. A town grew up around the farm, and by 1909 Ralston had its own post office; incorporation followed in 1912. Main Street was flattened in the following year by a devastating tornado; rather than giving up, local residents rebuilt the town and added significant improvements, including widening the streets and adding a public library that still serves as a center of activity within the community. Today, Ralston offers a quiet oasis in the midst of Omaha’s urban sprawl, allowing its residents to enjoy the best of both worlds; Ralston provides residents with small-town living within easy reach of the advantages of the big city. Real estate prices are reasonable, with median home prices around $130,000, making Ralston the perfect entry-level neighborhood for families in the Omaha area.
