Fall  is  often  one  of  the  busiest  times  of  the  year  for  many  homeowners  and   therefore,  lawn  care  is  not  always  a  top  priority.  What  many  homeowners  aren’t   aware  of  is  how  important  this  season  is  for  the  health  of  your  lawn.  The  proactive   steps  you  take  during  the  Fall  will  help  bring  back  a  blossoming  lawn in the spring.

The team at Sun Valley Landscaping has identified the top five to-do list items for all homeowners this October and early November to prepare for the winter season:

Sprinkler Winterization/Turning Off Ponds

Be sure to take the necessary precautions to prepare your sprinkler system for the winter months in order to avoid frozen pipes. Turn of all ponds and backyard water features.

Your local landscape company is  a great resource; otherwise, we've included a "How To" video to ensure every homeowner is prepared to complete this step:

Lawn and Leaf Clean-Up

During the fall months, it's important to take the final steps to complete your lawn and leaf cleanup. In short, mow, over-seed, aereate and fertilize in order to maintain a healthy root system during the upcoming cold temperatures.

Apply winter fertilizer to turf grass n the fall so your lawn can store carbohydrates to survive the winter months. You will notice a huge difference in the health of your lawn come spring.

Fall is the best time for chemical applications when the temperature is less than 85 degrees. Included in the leaf cleanup to do list is the removal of sticks, leaves and other debris in your yard to prevent mold.

Gutter Cleaning

This is one of the most important steps to take in order to be proactive and avoid costly repairs in teh future. Clean your gutters and downspouts before the winter season hits!

Landscape Bed Cleanups

During the fall season it is also recommended that you complete your final bed cleanups before the snowy season hits.

This includes trimming and pruning all bushes and perennials, treat diseased plants and remove diseased foliage before the leaves drop, deadheading shrubs and begin moving your houseplants indoors so they adjust to the climate change.

Fall- and Holiday-Themed Pots

Finish off your Fall to-do list by completing your holiday container design and installation. Enhance the look of your landscape with beautiful seasonal containers for the Fall or upcoming holidays!

As homeowners, you have many choices to make when it comes to finding the perfect pot, such as color, height and weather resistance. Meet with you local professional designer for inspiration this holiday season.
