Pinewood Elementary School opened in 1974. Until 1998 Pinewood was a traditional elementary school, serving students in kindergarten through sixth grade. During the 1997-1998 school year staff began to collect data to determine why Pinewood student achievement was comparatively lower than other schools in the Omaha Public School district (OPS). After research by a leadership team of teachers and parents, Pinewood began multiage instruction in one classroom in the 1998-1999 school year and fully implemented the multiage model in all classrooms by the 2002-2003 school year. Multiage philosophy has proven successful in building a community of learners, encouraging independence, engaging students, and meeting student needs.
The 2017-18 school year saw Pinewood continuing to focus on their mission: Pinewood School is a team of staff, students, parents and community working together to teach students to become high achievers, life-long learners, and responsible citizens. We serve students in multiage Early Childhood Special Education, Prekindergarten (three and four year olds), and Kindergarten/1st Grade classrooms. We also serve students in single grade 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms.
