Sunny Slope Elementary School started as a one-room school, known as District 16 of Douglas County, which was erected in the late 1890's. Upon becoming part of the Omaha Public School System in 1958, the name officially changed to Sunny Slope.
The mission statement for Sunny Slope Elementary School stresses the need to "educate all students and to challenge them to their highest level of academic achievement." It also emphasizes the need to prepare young people to "develop an awareness of and respect for the intrinsic values of cultures that differ from his or her own." The curriculum focuses on student achievement and providing "differentiated learning experiences" to meet individual student needs.
To assist staff in meeting these student needs, special programs and assistance are offered to students. These programs include the gifted and talented, English as a Second Language, and special education programs. Sunny Slope boasts a supportive parent teacher association (PTA) and Adopt a School partners that have been a tremendous assistance throughout the school year.
